Description: The BC-309 Paladin Class is a class of Earth Battlecruiser / Deep Space Carrier (BC/DSC) developed to replace the aging Daedalus Class, as well as the unsuccessful Phoenix Class. It is also designed to augment the Ares Class and Protector Class as well as be a more viable option for the Excalibur Class Fleet Carrier, a class plagued with issues, mainly in the form costs both in production and high losses.
Two prototypes of the Paladin class are under construction designated X-309. The Paladin and the Vanguard, with the former being funded mainly by the Commonwealth and the later by the US.
The Paladin features many improvements over the Daedalus and Phoenix classes it is designed to eventually replace. Despite being nearly twice the size it has almost an equal crew compliment and the bulk of the crew are flight personnel to manage the air group that is twice the size. The ship features greatly increased autonomy which accounts for the decreased crew compliment. It also reduces the cost and time of manufacturing due to new production methods. A more modular design also eased construction and repair, allowing components to be constructed at smaller sites and transported for final assembly.
The 309 includes several new technologies. It is the first platform to use the Tau'ri Mark I Hyperdrive the first drive designed by humans as opposed to the Asgard design. It features upgrades using knowledge learned from working with Ancient Hyperdrives. It produces a top speed of 10,000 light years an hour which can be boosted to 32,000 light years an hour with a ZPM. The sub light drives have also been improved with a top speed of 175,000 km/s and 270,000 km/s with a ZPM, allowing the ship to travel at 90% the speed of light. However at these speed temporal relativity cause time dilation, resulting in a significant external acceleration, and is limited to short duration emergency operation only.
